Late Morning in Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve

Located between San Jose and Morgan Hill, this park of rolling hills, oak savanna, serpentine rock outcroppings, and native grasslands is a great place to spot raptors. We’ll start by birding the parking lot and small meadow before hiking a short portion of the Arrowhead Loop Trail.  Raptors such as American Kestrels, Northern Harriers, and Red-tailed Hawks are expected. Ferruginous Hawks and Golden Eagles are possible. We’ll also be on the lookout for Loggerhead Shrikes, Rock Wrens, and Say’s Phoebes.

Trip Difficulty: 3 miles, dirt trails, some hills

Directions:  From US-101, exit Bailey Ave. Travel west for about 0.7 miles then turn left onto Santa Teresa Blvd. Continue for about 2 miles then turn right onto Palm Ave. Preserve is at the end of the road.

Facilities:  ADA accessible restroom, no water
